Course Aims

This course aims to:

  • Give students an in-depth knowledge of packaging technology a carried out in the alcoholic beverage industries.
    • Maturation of green beer, and the processing required to prepare beer for packaging and dispense.
    • The processing of whisky from casks in the bonded warehouse to packaged product.
  • Provide students with detailed knowledge of packaging equipment and processes for the industry, the layouts of typical packaging lines, their key design parameters and their benefits
  • Enable students to critically assess the packaging materials available and their suitability for particular duties on the basis of function, quality, cost, and marketing.
  • Provide students with the information so that they understand the role of packaging material in the environment and in society, and the basics of the UK Government (and EU legislation) that encompasses these activities
  • Give an understanding of NPD and the intertwined relationship between packaging and the marketing/advertising image of a product.
  • Provide visits to industrial premises in order to “bring alive” the theory and concepts presented.

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the role of packaging as applied to alcoholic beverages.
  • Make evaluative judgements on the selection of primary, secondary and tertiary materials for packaging applications.
  • Design the best layout of a packaging line, including allowance for materials supply, waste removal and operator/machine interfaces
  • Explain the operation of key pieces of packaging equipment.
  • Demonstrate a detailed appreciation of the quality issues in packaging and the key parameters that can affect product quality
  • Understand the need for the involvement of a  multi-disciplinary team for NPD
  • Understand the importance of packaging for the brand image of alcoholic drinks.

  • Appreciate the importance of packaging to the brewing and distilling industries in terms of cost, marketing, technology, safety and security
  • Recognise the key components of a package and its key functions to contain, protect, present and inform.
  • Learn to work alone, manage time and prioritise workloads.
